Welcome to Barrowby’s Community Orchard

Barrowby’s Community Orchard is a special village project created by Barrowby Parish Council’s Recreation and Green Space Group to mark the Coronation of King Charles III. It can be found at the Willows, the green space on Pastures / Readings Road.

Funded by the Coronation Living Heritage Fund in partnership with South Kesteven District Council, the orchard has been planted as a lasting community asset for residents to enjoy now and for generations to come. It currently includes 5 varieties of apple tree, carefully chosen for their links to the local area and traditional fruit-growing heritage. These include the famous Bramley’s Seedling from Southwell; the Peasgood Nonsuch, a well regarded variety raised in 1857 by Mrs Peasgood of Grantham; and the Dewdneys Seedling, a lesser known culinary apple, also known as Baron Wolsey and first attributed in 1850 to a Mrs Dewdney who lived in Barrowby!

A community orchard is more than just a collection of fruit trees. It is a shared space that brings people together, supports wildlife, celebrates local heritage and creates opportunities for learning, volunteering and community enjoyment. Over time, we hope the orchard will become a place where residents can take pride in caring for the trees, enjoying the blossom, and harvesting the fruit when the season arrives.

Community orchards – Apples & Orchards Project

As the orchard grows, we hope to host a range of community events led by the orchard group, such as harvesting days, scumping, apple pressing and other seasonal activities that bring people together and make the most of this wonderful shared resource.

Our Orchard Project has been supported by several local organisations.  The rabbit guards and stakes were given by Boothby Wildlands rewilding project. Woodchip mulch was provided by Crimson Kings Tree Services.

All of the timber used for the individual tree enclosures was from locally harvested sweet chestnut from the Pancake Hill Sustainable Woodlands Community Interest Company,

We would love for more local residents and businesses to get involved in the orchard project. The Parish Council is keen to build a Community Orchard Working Group to help care for the trees, support their long-term health, and shape future activities. Whether you have gardening experience or simply want to help with an enjoyable local project, new volunteers would be very welcome.

To find out more or express an interest in joining the working group, please contact Barrowby Parish Council.
