The Role of Barrowby Parish Council

About Barrowby Parish Council

Parish or Town Councils are an important tier of Government within the UK. A Parish Council is the smallest and most localised level of local government, sitting below national government and below district or county authorities. Despite its size, a Parish Council is a properly constituted local authority with defined powers and responsibilities.

The way a Parish Council operates — including its duties, decision-making processes and legal obligations — is set out in various Acts of Parliament, such as the Local Government Act 1972 and the Public Health Act 1936. Parish Councils can influence matters that directly affect local life, such as commenting on planning applications and looking after community facilities.

Barrowby Parish Council is responsible for a number of assets and services that contribute to everyday life in our village. We own, manage and maintain:

  • Barrowby Parish Council Allotments

  • The Pavilion

  • The Reading Room

  • The Village Green

  • Play equipment throughout the village

  • Adamstyles Play Area

  • The Burial Ground

  • Public Defibrillators

  • Flowerbeds and planters

  • Grass cutting in Parish-managed areas

  • Village assets including benches, noticeboards and community spaces

We are also here to act as a voice for residents — representing Barrowby’s views when decisions are made that impact the parish.

How We Are Funded

To deliver our work, Barrowby Parish Council raises funds through an annual Precept. This is set each winter and forms a small part of your Council Tax bill. Lincolnshire County Council collects this on our behalf.

We may also apply for grants or work with other organisations to support improvements and projects that directly benefit the village. Every penny is spent carefully and with the community’s best interests in mind.
