Barrowby Burial Ground

Barrowby Burial Ground is located in the village of Barrowby, Lincolnshire, adjacent to All Saints’ Churchyard. The site lies next to the church but is accessed by foot only—there’s no vehicular access. Visitors can reach the burial ground via the footpath to the right of the church’s main entrance. It's important to park considerately, especially near the school entrance, and visits should ideally be made during daylight hours, as there is no lighting on site.

How It Is Run

Management & Oversight

The Barrowby Parish Council serves as the Burial Authority for the Burial Ground. The Parish Clerk oversees all administrative, maintenance, and regulatory aspects.

Residency & Rights

  • To purchase the Exclusive Right of Burial (EROB), the purchaser must be a resident of Barrowby, or the burial must pertain to someone who lived in Barrowby at their time of death.

  • Special considerations exist for:

    • Non-residents’ ashes interred in existing family graves (with written permissions and application);

    • Serving military members from Barrowby family roots;

    • Full-time students away at education but with Barrowby as their family base;

    • Former residents now in care homes;

    • Individuals who have lived with relatives in Barrowby for at least six months (valid proof required).

    • The Authority may consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial

  • The EROB is initially granted for 10 years, renewable for another 10 upon request and fee payment. If not renewed, the plot reverts to the Burial Authority.

  • A burial plot may contain up to two interments, which must be declared at purchase. Ownership transfers and relinquishments must be submitted in writing, considered by the Burial Authority, and are subject to a small fee.

Care of Graves & Memorials

  • The Burial Authority is responsible for safety inspections of memorials (every three years or as needed). At-risk gravestones may be temporarily supported or laid down. Owners are contacted to arrange repairs.

  • Memorial erection (including headstones, plaques, etc.) requires an Application for the Erection of a Memorial and subsequent Permit, usually handled through professional monumental masons. Restrictions include:

    • Headstones: max height 760 mm, width 900 mm, must use BS 8414-compliant anchoring, no monoliths, erected only after six months.

    • Plaques: flat, max 460 × 460 mm, installed three months after interment, fitted on raised base slabs.

    • Vases: max 60 mm above stone, only two permitted, must be integral. Temporary vases may be hired for six months.

    • Memorial roses: available for 5-year hire with plaque, optionally extended, planting managed by the Burial Authority.

    • No kerbs, glass containers, informal linking structures, or non-authorised planting allowed.
