Barrowby Parish Council: Proudly Supporting Community Groups and Local Initiatives

The Parish Council is proud to support the many community groups that enrich village life — from the Flower Group and Barrowby Open Door, to the RAGS (Recreation & Green Space). These groups bring energy, local knowledge and volunteer power, and we work with them by offering encouragement, advice and practical support, and by helping to promote their activities within the wider community.

We also work closely with the Barrowby Events Team, which collaborates with the Council on village celebrations and helps deliver community gatherings that the Council itself could not run alone.

Why doesn’t the Parish Council just organise everything ourselves?
There are good reasons:

  • When it comes to planning consultations via South Kesteven District Council, the Parish Council and its councillors must avoid predetermination or perceived bias. In simple terms: if we appear to have already made up our minds, or take actions that suggest we are not impartial, our voice may be constrained or legally challenged.
  • Some funding or support opportunities specifically favour — or are open only to — independent community organisations, not local authorities.
  • Our resources — staff, time and budget — are limited, so we focus on our statutory duties, maintaining parish facilities, and enabling community events to achieve the greatest value and widest engagement across Barrowby.
  • Independent groups often have more flexibility, stronger local trust, or better reach into parts of the community that a council cannot easily access.

In short, Barrowby works best when the Council, the Events Team and local groups each play their part. Together, we can do more than any one body alone. If you’re involved in a local group or have an idea for a community project or event and would like support, the Parish Council would be very pleased to hear from you.
